big white house near sete cidades

My husband, after a 30 year absence from his hometown of Vila Franca do Campo, returned and took me to his island. We toured much of it, and it is gorgeous--I'd love to go back. I'm wondering about this house we saw near Sete Cidades. From the parking lot near the bridge across the lakes, if you stand with your back to the lake, there is an impressive white house in front of you, perhaps a few hundred feet away. Is this of historical, or other, significance?
