how far is the airport from the city (sao miguel) and what are some affordable hotel near by.

Thanks for asking! The airport is right at the capital city of Ponta Delgada. So it is very convenient.
There are many choices for accommodation. I recommend this Accommodation in Azores
You can look at other options at: Azores Hotel - just be sure to look at the ones for Sao Miguel.
