Tunnel from Sete Cidades

Tunnel from Sete Cidades

We will be staying in Mosteiros for one week in late April and early May. I have heard that there is a tunnel to Sete Cicades. Is the tunnel well marked? Can you recommend any restaurants in Mosteiros - we will not have a car the first two days? Are there hot springs in Mosteiros as well as Ponta Da Ferraria? Thanks for your help.

Reply from Rob:
Hi Lyn
There is a tunnel to Sete Cidades. It is not well marked and it is intended for draining the lakes in the crater. It is passable on foot but is dark, damp and musty. From Moisteros you can find the tunnel at a picnic area on the main road above town. Sorry, I can't find a recent picture of it. I did include a picture from the Sete Cidades side.

Lyn, even though I always make a point of visiting Mosteiros on vacations to Sao Miguel, I can't seem to recall eating there. I know there are a couple of restaurants, but I can't say if they are good or bad.

For hot springs, Ponta da Ferraria is your best option.

I hope you enjoy your vacation! Please stay in touch.

Eating in Mosteiros
by: Bonita

For a good home cooked meal for lunches all year round,(dinner is served in the summer months only), try the restaurant, Gazcidla. Just after you come down the hill turn to the right. On your left side you will see the name, Gazcidla. Go up the stairs to enter the dining area with views of the Mosteiros islets.

Is it warm enough to swim?
by: Rob

Hello,

I will be in Mosteiros during the first and second week of June. Is it warm enough to swim in the ocean? Also, does the village have a bakery? I can't wait to get there!

Thank you,
Rpb

We had a lovely visit in Mosteiros. We rented a house right by the bay which we loved. There was a grocey store right up the street from "our" house so we ended up eating at home. I really wanted to go to the restaurant with the sign but we made a day trip to a different city around the island each day. By the time we got back to Mosteiros, it was easier to toss together a meal and sit on the patio to enjoy the waves. By the way, we fell in love with the local cheese. Great little village.

Hi Lyn

Bonita knows the area well as she manages a property in Mosteiros in addition to running her own Accommodation in Azores, Quinta das Acacias.

Thanks for commenting Bonita!

thanks

Thanks Bonita, that is exactly the kind of advice I was looking for. Also we heard there is a pizzeria. Is this currently true? We will be there soon!

And, thanks for the photo of the tunnel. We will try to find it during our week stay there.

Mosteiros restaurants
by: Bonita

Hello Lyn,
Coming into the village there is a nice family cafe-snack bar called Chico(Painted with bright yellow trims) before the church. It usually has a sign on the sidewalk-(We serve meals). There is another restaurant (large house painted pink) at the east end of Mosteiros. AS previous guests have told me repeatedly `You will be very disappointed if you try to eat there`
