Planning in Advance - Retiring from U.S. Military Soon

Hello from USA!

I am active duty US military now but will be retiring soon and planning to move to the islands. My children will be in high school and I am hoping due to the low cost of living, I will not have to work a 40 hour work week or at all. I am originally from the Azores but moved to the US when I was a child.

Any suggestions on planning would be great to avoid making mistakes. I plan to move to Terceira but looking also at Pico.

This is something I don't have a lot of experience or insight on.

I do suggest that you spend some time vacationing there to scope it out.
